MHS Bond Project: Auditorium Facts
Due to severe structural deficiencies confirmed by two engineering firms citing safety concerns, MGSD believes we have an obligation to students, parents, and community to use part of the proposed $40 million bond to build a new auditorium. The cost for this auditorium is $9.6 million with a capacity of 1,800. At the June 17 County Commissioner’s Meeting, the size of the proposed MHS auditorium was questioned using the reasoning that DPI recommends auditoriums seat one-half of the student population. MGSD reached out to DPI prior to the County Commissioner’s Meeting for guidance on this very issue. DPI stated that because the MHS auditorium is the only auditorium in the district and is used by all the schools and community, a capacity of 1,800 is appropriate. Furthermore, the current MHS auditorium seats 1,385 and is filled to capacity at multiple events throughout the year such as award ceremonies, concerts, musicals, and graduations. In addition, the capacity for the proposed MHS auditorium includes much needed instructional program space for approximately 500 students daily: Band (250 students), Choir (150 students), and Drama (100 students). MGSD does, however, want to make sure we maintain reasonable costs on any project so we compared our proposed auditorium to the two proposed auditorium renovations that Iredell-Statesville Schools requested in the same bond.
|Project Cost||Projected Student Population at Completion|
|Mooresville High School||$9,600,000||2,042|
|North Iredell High School||9,500,000||1,148|
|South Iredell High School||9,500,000||1,294|
