MGSD Redistricting Information
With the opening of the new Selma Burke Middle School in August 2023, the Mooresville Graded School District will execute a reconfiguration of both the grades housed at each school level, as well as the attendance boundaries for each school. Beginning with the 2023 - 2024 school year, grade configurations will be as follows:
- Elementary Schools - Grades K through 2 (currently K through 3)
- Intermediate Schools - Grades 3 through 5 (currently 4 through 6)
- Middle Schools - Grades 6 through 8 (currently 7 through 8)
- High School - Grades 9 through 12
These grade and boundary reconfigurations will create a more even distribution of our student population, allowing space for future growth at each school.

School Choice/Grandfathering - FAQs
Linked: Board of Education Memo - School Choice (Option "B" Approved)
On January 10, 2023, the MGSD Board of Education voted to allow school choice/grandfathering for the 2023-2024 school year for those students who are directly affected by the new district boundary lines.
Q: Which students are considered “directly affected”?
A: A student who is currently enrolled in MGSD, will be entering 1st, 2nd, 5th, or 8th grade in 2023-2024, and would have to change schools due to the new boundaries from redistricting.
Q: With the new boundary lines, my child is no longer zoned for the school she currently attends. We would prefer not to change schools. Do we have options?
A: If your child is in Kindergarten or 1st grade for the 2022-2023 school year at any of our elementary schools and is zoned for a different elementary school in 2023-2024 due to the new school boundary lines, they can fill out the school choice form when it is released and choose to remain at their current school. If your student is currently in Kindergarten, you will need to fill out a school choice form this year for them to attend 1st grade at their school of choice in 2023-2024, and again next spring if you wish for them to attend 2nd grade at their school of choice in 2024-2025. Likewise, If your student is currently in 1st grade, you will need to fill out a school choice form this year for them to attend 2nd grade at their school of choice in 2023-2024. Once they finish 2nd grade, they will enter 3rd grade at the intermediate school that they are assigned to attend.
If your student is in 4th grade this school year at one of our intermediate schools and is zoned for the other intermediate school in 2023-2024 due to the new school boundary lines, you will need to fill out a school choice form this year for them to attend 5th grade at their school of choice in 2023-2024. Once they finish 5th grade, they will enter 6th grade at the middle school they are assigned to attend.
Q: My student currently attends Mooresville Middle School as a 7th grade student. They will be zoned to attend Selma Burke Middle School for 8th grade in the 2023-2024 school year. We would like to remain at Mooresville Middle School for their final year of middle school. What are our options?
A: If your student is in 7th grade at Mooresville Middle School for the 2022-2023 school year but is zoned to attend the new Selma Burke Middle School next August, you will need to fill out a school choice form when it is released choosing to stay at Mooresville Middle School for the 2023-2024 school year. There is a cap of 20 percent of SBMS students who will be allowed to choice to MMS. If necessary, a lottery system will be used to choose the 20 percent of students zoned for SBMS who will be allowed to attend MMS.
Q: If I utilize the school choice option, will busing be provided?
A: No, students who choose to attend a school outside of their zoned school will be responsible for providing their own transportation.
Q: If I utilize the school choice option, can I change back to my zoned school during the 2023-24 school year?
A: No, school choice is a year long commitment by both the parents and student.
Q: Where can I find the new boundaries?
A: Please visit the MGSD Redistricting Website.
Q: What is a specialized program that would allow me to stay at a particular school?
A: Specific Exceptional Children’s classes (communication class & developmental day) that are only offered at one school. Therapeutic Support Class (TSC) is a specialized program.
Note: Dual Immersion is not a specialized program as it is offered at all elementary and intermediate schools.
Q: Am I eligible for grandfathering/choice if my child is in a preK program?
A: No. Eligibility is for current MGSD students who will be entering 1st, 2nd, 5th, or 8th grade in the 2023-2024 school year.
Q: If one of my students is eligible for school choice/grandfathering, are siblings eligible?
A: No. For example, you currently have a 1st grade student at Rocky River Elementary and a rising Kindergarten student. With the redistricting, you are now zoned for South Elementary. Your 1st grade student would qualify for grandfathering/school choice to remain at Rocky River for her 2nd grade year; however, your rising Kindergarten student would not qualify for grandfathering and would be required to attend South Elementary.
Q: When will I be able to request school choice for my student?
A: All students will receive school assignment letters via ParentSquare the week of January 16. If your student qualifies for grandfathering/school choice, there will be a link to a form in your school assignment notification. You will need to fill out that form by 4:00pm on January 30, 2023.
Q: When will I find out if I am approved for School choice?
A: We hope to notify our families who qualify and apply for school choice by the end of February.
