Board of Education News and Happenings
From retirements to new administrative appointments, the June board meeting was full of "Congratulations!"
Thank you, Retirees!

The Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education held its monthly board meeting for June on Tuesday evening, June 9.  The meeting was filled with joy and a little sadness as the board members and Dr. Edwards honored this year's retirees.

This year's retirees were as pictured from left to right:  Dr. Debbie Marsh, South Principal; Ms. Kathey Everhart, EMIS Custodian; Ms. Susan Huntsinger, MMS Child Nutrition Manager; Ms. Terry Lehmann, MHS Media Specialist; Ms. Debra Page, MHS Teacher; Ms. Mary Flowers, MHS Teacher; Ms. Kathy Layton, Student Services Administrative Assistant; Ms. Roseann Burklow, MIS Teacher; Mr. Ronald Patterson, MMS Teacher; Ms. Jody Cohen, MIS Teacher; Ms. Mary Kidwell, NF Woods Teacher; Ms. Nancy Gardner, MHS Teacher; Ms. Gina Crippen, RRES Media Specialist; and Ms. Robbin Melton, RRES Assistant Principal.  Also retiring but not pictured were Kathleen Wilson, MIS Counselor; Louise Gingery, MMS Teacher; Joanne Harmon, MIS Teacher; Sandra Sullivan, MHS Teacher; and Brenda Leazer, MMS Financial Data Manager.

Each of these public servants made their mark during their years at Mooresville.  They will be missed!

Above and Beyond the Call of Duty

The Board of Education recognized Amanda Coble, MMS School Nurse, for the June ABCD award.  Amanda was nominated by the whole administrative staff at MMS who said in the nomination:

"This is the first year we have ever had a full time nurse at MMS because of various student needs that require this attention. Amanda joined us from the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center ER, and she has jumped in with both feet, arms, everything! She has quickly become a team player putting our students’ needs first to help them learn. She is also a wonderful asset to our staff. She is an excellent communicator who proactively works with parents to help their children succeed. She has also been very active on the School Health Advisory Committee at the district level. She has high expectations, but is personable and gentle in her rapport with others. We so appreciate her ability to help ALL members of MMS, and we are very thankful for her leadership!"

Congratulations Nurse Coble!

New Administrative Appointments

The Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education voted on three administrative appointments at Tuesday's meeting.  Dr. Jason Gardner, current principal at East Mooresville Intermediate School, will be transferring to Mooresville Middle School to take the place of Principal Carrie Tulbert who is pursing other opportunities outside of MGSD.  Dr. Gardner has been a wonderful leader at EMIS and we are excited that he will be able to share his leadership at the middle school next year!  Dr. Mark Cottone will be transferring as the principal at Park View Elementary to South Elementary where Principal Debbie Marsh is retiring.  At Park View, Dr. Cottone took the school to the top of the state in third grade assessments.  We believe he will continue the phenomenal leadership that South has come to appreciate under Dr. Marsh. Ms. Robin Melton, Rocky River Elementary assistant principal, is also retiring.  Filling her position will be Lani Earnhardt who has been a great teacher-leader at RRES.  Congratulations to all of these exceptional leaders on their new positions!

Instructional Highlight

During the 2nd semester, students in Ms. Melanie Kalkan's MHS honors choir and Ms. Amy McComas' MMS choir, worked on a joint project #BeBrave which was a service learning project to support the students with special needs at both schools.  The culmination of the project was a joint spring concert and volunteering at Special Olympics Spring Games at the MHS Stadium. This project will be presented as a session at the National Association for Music Education Conference in October by Ms. Kalkan, Ms. McComas and Ms. Davis (MMS Technology Facilitator).

At the board meeting, Ms. Kalkan and Ms. McComas, along with two of their students, explained the project; furthermore, MHS seniors Heidi Garaas and Kaleigh Polson gave reflections from a student's point of view. Throughout the semester, our special needs students spent time learning music and interacting with the choir students.  Both students spoke about how working with our special needs population daily affected them in positive ways and how friendships were formed.

The highlight ended with each member of the board, including Dr. Edwards, receiving one of the shirts worn by the chorus members during the project.  The shirts have the #BeBrave15 logo. Thank you to all of the students involved.  Each one emulates our philosophy of every child, every day!
