October 2014 MGSD Board of Education Meeting
The October 2014 MGSD Board of Education meeting was full of celebrations and congratulations.

Artist of the Month

The Board recognized Katherine Durgin, a Mooresville High School freshman, as the district's Artist of the Month.  Katherine sang a beautiful rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" for attendees of Tuesday evening's meeting.  Kate has been singing for seven years and is currently a member of the MHS chorus and theatre programs.  Prior to attending MHS, Kate performed in 14 musicals.

The Above and Beyond the Call of Duty award was given to Ms. Lori Smith, BASP and Kindergarten group insructor at Park View Elementary School.  Ms. Smith was nominated by Cindy Karriker, BASP director, and Missy Foley.  In the nomination, Ms.  said:  "I have worked with Lori for many years and she has always had a very loving and devoted attitude toward the children in her care.   The children are immediately drawn to Lori’s enthusiastic and affectionate approach.  She always gives hugs and responds to an “I love you” with an “I love you too” .  This year is particularly unique in that we have six kindergarteners that had siblings enrolled in the program last year.  Lori had gotten to know these children, as they came in with their parents to pick up their siblings, and they have been anxiously waiting for the day that they could be in Miss Lori’s group.  As the children age out of Lori’s group, they often make the comment that they do not want to leave Miss Lori.  She has a wonderful connection with children and they seem to be drawn to her. Due to her affectionate approach and her wonderful connection with “every child every day,” I am nominating Lori Smith for the ABCD Award."

MGSD Accreditation Report

MGSD went through its AdvancED/SACS re-accreditation process last spring.  Dr. Donna James, Director of AdvancED North Carolina, presented the district with its accreditation plaque, along with the individual school plaques at last night’s meeting. In her presentation, Dr. James noted that as a member of the AdvancED external review team, she has taken part in school accreditation reviews across the nation and one international review; however, MGSD is the first school to ever receive a three or higher in every category!
