Mooresville Graded School District was honored to have our Mooresville High School Blue Devils NJROTC present the Colors for the Pledge of Allegiance at the October 09 Board of Education meeting.

Artist of the Month
Congratulations to Rachel Peterkin, one of our 12th Grade Mooresville High School Blue Devils, who received the MGSD Artist of the Month recognition from our Board of Education!
Rachel was nominated by Ron Higdon, MHS drama teacher, Melanie Kalkan, MHS chorus teacher, and Joshua Stevenson, MHS band teacher. In their nomination of Rachel, her teachers said:
"Rachel Peterkin has been in marching band for two years having participated in multiple competitions and concerts. She is a theatre honors student and a member of The International Thespian Society. She recently appeared as Linus in the MHS Spring musical, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown. Rachel is currently working on the two plays submitted for the NC Theatre Conference. She is serving as the Production Stage Manager for Dark Road and is playing the role of Violet in the play Goodbye Charles. Rachel not only excels in the arts but is an excellent student in all of her studies!"
The MGSD Board of Education honored Ms. Judith McKee, MHS Counseling Dept. Secretary, with the ABCD Award for the month of October. Ms. McKee was nominated by Mooresville High School Blue Devils Principal Mr. Eric Schwarzenegger who said of Ms. McKee:
"Ms. Judith McKee has been the Counseling Secretary at Mooresville High School since August 2017. Since joining the MHS staff full time, she has done an exceptional job managing the demands of her job, while also supporting her colleagues in the front office, and assisting students and their families with a warm smile and a can-do attitude. Upon enrollment, all new students and their families meet with Ms. McKee and I can’t think of a better person to provide the first impression of MHS and our values. She shows that she cares for every student by patiently listening to their fears and concerns, then does everything she can to get them the information or answers they need. Ms. McKee takes initiative. When she first came on the job, our records room looked like a tornado had partied with an earthquake due to the moving and renovations. Ms. McKee, along with her assistant, Ms. Benfield, got straight to work organizing 47 filing cabinets worth of records, never wasting a spare moment of their day. Today, you will find the records room looks better than it ever has before. As a former bus driver, Ms. McKee has an excellent working knowledge of transportation and is always willing to lend her expertise to provide a solution to a transportation problem or answer a question. Ms. McKee is the consummate professional. You will never hear her speak ill towards or of any person, but instead always looks for the positives. Toward her colleagues, she is dedicated, encouraging and unconditionally kind. Ms. McKee is a team player in that she will never hesitate to jump in and assist, even if the task isn’t in her job description. When Ms. McKee brings an issue or problem forward, she already has several possible solutions to put into action. Ms. McKee honors the staff and students of Mooresville High School every day with her attitude, work ethic, and infectious personality. It is my pleasure to honor her in return by nominating her for the Above and Beyond the Call of Duty award."
2019 - 2020 School Calendar: First Reading
MGSD Chief Operations Officer presented our proposed 2019 - 2020 Calendar to the Board of Education at the October 09 board meeting. Every year, MGSD uses a calendar committee to come up with the draft calendar to present to the Board of Education. This committee is made up of staff, parents, and administrators. In addition to the committee, this year parents and staff were surveyed district wide regarding switching from a traditional to a year-round/non-traditional calendar. The proposed year-round calendar includes an earlier start date with first semester ending prior to winter break. In addition, there would be a one week break in between quarters and a two week break between semesters. Summer intercession classes would be offered for students in grades K through 12. The survey showed overwhelming support for the non-traditional calendar with 71 percent in favor of switching from the traditional calendar. The Board of Education will receive feedback for 30 days and vote on the calendar at the November 15 board meeting. To see the calendar that was presented to the board, click here.
The Mooresville Graded School District Board of Education has been awarded the 2018 NCSBA
Gold Bell Award. The Gold Bell Award reflects that the MGSD Board of Education was
committed to training excellence for the 2017-2018 NCSBA academy year and that they have
each attained the required 12 hours (or more) of professional development. In fact, each of our board
members had an average 41 hours each. The total combined hours in 2017-2018 were 236 hours! We are proud to have board members who care enough for our children and district to give of their time and efforts, as well as recognize the importance of life-long learning!
