Academic Success

Mooresville Graded School District (MGSD) has achieved noteworthy success as a direct result of a new Strategic Plan and the implementation of a Digital Conversion.  MGSD is a district of approximately 6200 students and 400 certified staff.  MGSD has seen an increase in the free and reduced population from the lower 30th percentile in 2008-2009 to 40% in 2010 - 2011.   With a diversity of 15% African American, 7% Hispanic, 3% Multiracial, 2% Asian and 73% white, MSGD is a representative sample of an average school system in the United States.

During the winter of the 2007 - 2008 School Year, MGSD started Phase I of the Digital Conversion by placing laptops on carts at the high school in all English classes, and giving all certified staff laptops.  In addition, all K-2 schools were outfitted as 21st Century Classrooms with the SMART suite of technologies (Board, Slate, and Response System).  In the fall of 2009 - 2010 Phase II was implemented and all Mooresville High School (MHS) students (all  9th - 12th grade students in the district - approximately 1650 students) and half of the districts’ 4th - 6th grade students at Mooresville Intermediate School (MIS)  (approximately 850 students) received laptops for their use 24/7 for the entire school year.  Phase III came in the fall of 2009 - 2010 when all 4th through 12th grades students received a laptop and all K - 3 grade classrooms received the SMART suite.  In the fall of 2010-2011 Phase IV was implemented and laptop carts were placed in third grade.

Mooresville Graded  Schools showed an increase of 13% during the 2009-2010 school year which ranked them 4th in the state with 86% proficiency. All schools were recognized as Schools of Distinction and Rocky River Elementary was recognized as an Honor School of Excellence.

Mooresville Graded School District

MGSD, as a district, was only one of 6 of the 115 NC School Districts achieving 54 out of 54 District AYP Goals. The District had a 7% Composite gain on all EOC/EOG test scores and reduced District Wide Suspensions by 50%.  According to a composite score on all North Carolina EOC and EOG tests, MGSD is currently tied for 4th in the state. All indications are that MGSD will again see significant gains in all areas for the 2010 - 2011 school year, and is poised to be number one in the state.  First Semester Scores, Benchmark data, teacher observations and anecdotal data suggest another pace setting year for achievement.

Of noteworthy importance is a statement about funding.  In North Carolina, there are 115 individual school districts.  According to the 2009 North Carolina Statistical Profile which ranks school systems across the state by per pupil expenditure, MGSD ranks 101 out of 115.  MGSD spends $7,902 per pupil, with the district spending the highest amount of $15,679 and the lowest spending $7,022.

MGSD has been highlighted at state and national meetings as a lighthouse district for technological success.  Several of our partners have written or published information about MGSD as a success story, including but not limited to:  Apple, Angel (BlackBoard), Cisco, Coleman Technologies, Discovery Education, Educational Leadership Magazine (Feb. 2011), NetTrekker, PBS, SAS, Wall Street Journal (February 9, 2011), ScanTron, and various researchers from numerous universities.

As a direct result of the above mentioned successes, MGSD has been visited by over 800 people from approximately 35 states and nearly 100 districts who are interested in the achievements and integration of technology into instruction by MGSD. Mooresville educators feel compelled to share their successes and innovations with others and believe that if they can do this, any district can!
