Happy May Day, MGSD families!
There is a lot of information in this communication so please read through it carefully. From keeping laptops over the summer to new benefits for Free & Reduced lunch recipients, we want to make sure you are informed about what is happening in our district through this closure. To see past communications regarding our MGSD VLP, please visit our website at MGSD COVID-19 VLP.
School Nutrition Information & Free & Reduced Meal Benefits
We wanted to make you aware of an opportunity for families that may need assistance during these challenging times. As you may already know, MGSD Schools will NOT be re-opening for the remainder of this school year. North Carolina has been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to begin a new program that will help families who have been economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. P-EBT (Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer) program will help families purchase food for their children. More information about this program can be found here: P-EBT Program.
For children who are already eligible for free or reduced-price school meals and enrolled in MGSD, there is no application process to receive P-EBT benefits. Households that do not have an approved free or reduced-price meal application on file and have lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic may qualify for P-EBT. If your child is enrolled in MGSD and you do not have a free or reduced-price meal application on file, apply now by following this link: www.lunchapplication.com. In addition, please make sure that you have the correct address on file with your child’s school, as this is the address where the P-EBT cards will be sent by NCDHHS.
As a note, if you are eligible for meal benefits, these will start immediately, and your family will start the next school year (20-21) with these benefits. Please be advised, however, that you will need to complete a new application within 30 days of the next school year (20-21)
Families are encouraged to continue utilizing the FREE meal programs we have at South Elementary, Park View Elementary, and by Yellow School Bus. Please see the schedules below for bus stops and time.

MGSD Technology Update
With the end of our school year looking so differently from past years, we have made the decision to allow our students to keep their iPads/MacBooks over the summer this year. Not only will this simplify the logistics of returning approximately 6,000 devices during a time when we are practicing social distancing, but it will also allow students to have the opportunity to access educational applications throughout the summer.
If you do not want your child to have their device over the summer or if your child is withdrawing from MGSD to attend another school next year, 2nd - 12th grade students will need to turn in the laptop, charger brick, and 6 foot extension; Kindergarten and 1st graders will return the iPad and charger. Please bring the device and accessories to MGSD Technology Department, 574 W. McLelland Avenue (NF Woods Campus). The Technology Department will be available Monday - Friday from 8:00 am - 3:00pm. Please pull into the lower circle drive and call 704.658.2526 when you arrive to let us know you are there to return your equipment. For those students who will not be returning to a school within MGSD next year, you will be charged for items not returned and your student records will not be transferred to your new school until all returns are made.
If your child is a graduating senior who does not turn in their laptop on May 6 when Caps and Gowns are distributed, you may turn in your laptop, charger brick, and 6 foot extension by following the same directions as above.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to your child’s Principal or call the Technology Department at 704-658-2526.
Next week we celebrate a few key groups within our district: Our teachers, our school nutrition workers, and our school nurses! May 4 through May 8 is National Teacher Appreciation Week and School Nutrition Employee Week. May 6 is National School Nurses Day. Also, today is Principal Appreciation Day! All of our staff play a vital role in making sure we are meeting the needs of the whole child, whether in school or remotely, and we cannot thank them enough for all they do for every child, every day, and especially all they are doing right now!
Thank you for being our partners through all of this craziness. We appreciate you and your support. Please let us know if you have any questions!
